Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
Q: Can we preview the film before purchasing a screening kit?
A: Yes, of course! We are happy to send a password-protected link so you can view the film before you decide to purchase. Please send a screener request to Jen Tennican at jen@jentenproductions.com
We don’t know if we’ll be doing an in-person screening / Live Event (e.g., playing the digital file off a laptop for students in a classroom, screening the film for an audience in a community center, or for our staff in the conference room) or an online one / Virtual Event (e.g., streaming the film from a password-protected server to staff or students). Which license should our organization purchase?
A: We don’t want you to have to make an either-or decision so the basic license option for both kits, regardless of type of organization, includes a single screening Public Performance License (PPL) and a single screening Digital Site License (DSL). You have the flexibility to do one of each type of screening.
Q: I only want to share the film within my organization. Do I still need a Public Performance License (PPL)?
A: Yes, you do. According to the U.S. copyright law (Title 17, United States Code, Section 110), a public performance is any screening of a film which occurs outside of the home, or at any place where people are gathered who are not family members, such as in a school, library, auditorium, classroom or meeting room. Our screening kits are intended for educational use in a variety of settings — academic, nonprofit, governmental, etc. — so a PPL is required. The good news is that a single-screening PPL is included in kits regardless of organization type. Also, we’ve thrown in a Digital Site License (DSL), which means you can go virtual for your screening, if needed.
Q: What is a Digital Site License (DSL)? And what types do you offer?
A: A DSL allows for an online screening / Virtual Event to be hosted on your secure server, on a third party’s secure server, or on a secure platform with password-protection and authentication features (e.g., Zoom, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.). You can stream to a group viewing the film at the same time or allow each viewer to watch at his/her/their convenience. We offer a single screening DSL that comes standard on all kits, regardless of organization type, and an unlimited screenings/life of file DSL that is available for a modest additional charge. The latter means that you can upload the film to your secure server for unlimited use for the life of the digital file we deliver to you.
Q: Why aren’t there prices for for-profit organizations?
A: We customize our screening kit quotes for for-profits, so we can better meet a specific company’s needs. Please contact Jen Tennican at jen@jentenproductions.com. We can provide discounted licensing for multiple physical locations and/or national and international territories.
Q: Can I purchase a screening kit with a license that will allow my national/international nonprofit to share the film and its resources with our entire network (e.g., chapters, affiliates, etc.)?
A: We customize our screening kit quotes for nonprofits with national and international networks of chapters and affiliates, so we can better meet the needs of those organizations. Please contact Jen Tennican at jen@jentenproductions.com. We can provide discounted licensing for multiple physical locations and/or territories.
Q: May I charge an admission fee?
A: Yes, as long as it isn’t a fundraising event. Charging a modest admission fee to offset the cost of a screening is fine.
Q: May I use the film for a fundraiser for my organization?
A: We’re happy to have you use the film as a fundraiser, but we’ll need to negotiate a separate fee for that. Please contact Jennifer Tennican at jen@jentenproductions.com to discuss terms.
Q: How will our screening kit be delivered?
A: Both the film and resources will be delivered as digital files via a WeTransfer link. You will have two weeks from the arrival of the email with the WeTransfer link to download your screening kit. The kit will be in a folder that includes a version or versions of the film and other resources that are part of your screening kit. You may download the contents of your screening kit once.
Q: What if the digital files are corrupted or won’t play?
A: We will replace any damaged or defective file for free within seven days of notification by email (jen@jentenproductions.com). Please test your files within two weeks of downloading them.
Q: What is your refund policy?
A: We want happy customers, so if you deem the film to be inappropriate for your intended use, we will give you a full refund. You must submit your request for a refund via email to jen@jentenproductions.com within 30 days of the delivery of the digital download link for your screening kit. You will be asked to delete all copies of the digital files (Film and Film Resources) in your possession.
Q: I’m still not sure which kit and license options are right for my organization. Can I speak to someone?
A: Absolutely! We want you to select the right kit and options for your organization and intended use/s. Feel free to email Jen Tennican at jen@jentenproductions.com to set up a phone call or Zoom meeting.
